In August of 1993, Brendan’s Pub opened its basement doors, in the former Johnny’s Pub and Grille location at 1624 Market Street. What happened over the next 8 years was called legendary, fun, hip and at times, downright crazy. The living blues legends that graced the stage are too many to name but Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown, Matt “Guitar” Murphy, Jimmy Rogers, Lonnie Brooks and W.C. Clark are just a few of the incredible musicians who have played. Chad Smith, Phillip Bailey, Johnnie Johnson and Los Lobos are just a few names that sat in. In 2002, with rising rent costs, we attempted to move the concept to our own building; needless to say it wasn’t the same. We have spent several years looking for the right opportunity. The Club 404 was founded in 1951 and was a mainstay on Broadway for 60 years.
The Feld family operated it until its sale in 2011. The story of this neighborhood icon is embedded in Denver history, the steaks and prices were as legendary as the man and family that ran it. Combining the two concepts seemed natural. The goal is to bring back the concepts of the menu that put the 404 on the map with the music and ambience that made Brendan’s, well, Brendan’s. Give us a try and we will do our best to make it interesting.
